Poland, The Country That Changed My Perception
There are a lot of amazing things about being a solo traveller, but there are also some downsides. One of my biggest worries is being in a place that I’m not keen on with people I’m not comfortable with.
I will admit, that when I arrived in Poland I didn’t like it. My first port of call was Szezecin. I didn’t like driving round it and when I decided to explore on my bike it felt like everyone wanted to run me over. Not really a great first impression right? I felt completely out of my comfort zone and that gave me a very negative outlook. I was unsure whether it would change if I carried on – but I thought I ought to give it another chance.
My next stop was Gdyina, to visit a brewery there called AleBroWar. They have a reputation as one of the best craft breweries in Poland.
The drive between Szezecin and Gdyina was about 300km, on what I expected to be motorways. But Poland is still building most of its motorways so I ended up driving on extremely well used country roads. But gosh, it was a stunning drive. Everywhere you looked was lush greenery, beautiful trees either side of the road and very traditional villages along the way. My mind instantly felt at ease and I truly enjoyed the drive. Well apart from the fact the roads were appalling and I thought the van would rattle itself to pieces!
Gdyina was a beautiful place. Modern, relaxing and a lot of fun.
I concluded I’d judged Poland too quickly and I wasn’t appreciating the beauty that was there. The contrast between the old eastern block architecture and sleek modern glass buildings of a new European country. Friendly people, and good food. I loved it. So much so I called my parents that evening and told them they really needed to get on a plane and come and visit.
My final stop in Poland was Gdansk. It’s one of the most beautiful cities I’ve been to. I was in love with the place and I wanted to stay longer but, I’m starting to run short of time, I’ve a few van problems and I was struggling to find camp sites so I headed back to Germany.
Poland is an absolute treat and I look forward to returning and getting to know it better.
